Dear friends,

Now that 2015 is coming to an end, we can reflect back on a year of extraordinary advances in viral hepatitis. For HCV, the dream of short term pangenotypic therapy is getting closer. The all oral drug regimens are now becoming a reality even in Asia but there is still considerable uncertainty about which regimens to use and in which patients. The hard to treat genotype 3 is still challenging in some situations. For HBV, treatment options using interferon and nucleos(t)ide analogues are still being explored with interesting results, but the possibility of stopping therapy in some patients leading to HBsAg seroclearance seems quite astonishing. The most exciting developments are the new therapeutic agents in clinical trial (core inhibitor, TLR7 agonists, therapeutic vaccines) that may lead to HBsAg seroclearance, the closest to a cure of HBV.
